Getting Started

Congratulations! You’ve achieved the first step in the process of building and owning your own home. By simply selecting this page, you’ve shown two important attributes needed to succeed:

Desire – To want the benefits and pride that come from home ownership.

Willingness – To consider an alternate way to reach this worthwhile goal.

On other pages in this Web site you will find information on:

Here I’ll address the two questions I’m asked most: “What’s involved?” and “How much can I save?” Of course, these answers depend on a variety of factors.

What’s involved?

First, the most important factor in the owner-builder equation is YOU – your housing needs and desires, budget, level of involvement, abilities and time.  Other external factors to consider include (among other things) interest rates, land and building costs, location and timing, as well as economic, political, geographic and climate issues.

Second, while the rewards are great, building a home is no small task. It involves careful planning, detailed organization, personal and family flexibility, commitment and hard work.

I’m here to help. As a professional building consultant and your personal coach, I shepherd and support you step-by-step through each stage of this complex but exciting process.

How much can you save?

The majority of the construction costs on a new home are typically spent on labor performed by others. By doing some or all of the work yourself, you can reduce your labor costs and save up to 40% on the total cost of building your new home.

What J Crook Construction offers:

I offer an initial complementary meeting to (a) discuss your goals, (b) explain the general process and my services, and (c) decide how to proceed.

Then, depending on how much of the actual work you can and want to take on, I have three levels of service contracts you can choose from:

    A.  Management Contract:

Greatest client participation: Hourly fee through the assessment process. Flat fee after plans are approved by the building department.

    B. Cost-Plus Contract:

Less client participation & control:  Fee based on cost of project as it progresses.

    C.  Standard Contract:

Least client participation & control:  Fixed cost for construction of the project.
